For Gabriela Mendoza-Ewing, serving on the Washington State Developmental Disabilities Council from 2018 to 2025—first as a member and later as co-chair—was more than a role. It was a transformative journey of purpose, connection, and lasting impact.

“Serving as a member and co-chair of the Developmental Disabilities Council for the state of Washington has been an extraordinary and deeply fulfilling journey,” Gabriela said as she looked back on her seven-year term. Throughout this time, she worked alongside a deeply committed network of self-advocates, family members, service providers, and policymakers. What united them was a shared commitment to championing the rights, dignity, and inclusion of individuals with developmental disabilities.

The experience, she says, reshaped her understanding of advocacy. “I have witnessed firsthand how dedicated efforts can lead to meaningful change—whether through shaping policies that expand access to services, increasing awareness to break down stigmas, or empowering individuals and families to advocate for themselves.” For Gabriela, knowing that their collective work has improved lives and opened doors once closed fills her with “immense gratitude.”

Some of the most powerful moments during her service came from seeing the real-life impact of the Council’s work. “I’ve seen the profound impact that advocacy and community support can have on families,” she shared. She recalled watching caregivers and parents find hope and resilience through resources the Council helped strengthen. “I’ve watched individuals gain confidence to pursue their dreams, participate more fully in community life, and live with greater independence.” These stories, she said, fueled her ongoing commitment and reminded her why the work mattered.

Equally meaningful were the relationships built along the way. “The friendships I have made are among the greatest treasures of this experience,” Gabriela reflected. The trust and camaraderie she found within the Council created bonds that extended far beyond the formal work of meetings and planning. “The trust, shared passion, and collaborative spirit among members, advocates, and families have created bonds that go beyond professional duty,” she said. “These relationships have been sources of inspiration, comfort, and motivation—reminding me daily of the vital importance of compassion, perseverance, and unity in our work.”

As she moves on from her formal Council role, Gabriela carries with her a sense of purpose that has only deepened. “I am profoundly grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to learn, to contribute, and to be part of a movement that is continually striving to foster an inclusive society,” she said. “The progress achieved through our shared efforts, no matter how small they may have seemed at the time, has contributed to a legacy of hope and progress for generations to come.”

Ultimately, her time on the Council reaffirmed what she always believed to be true: that advocacy and community can drive meaningful change. “It has taught me that change is possible when passionate individuals come together with a common purpose,” she said. “I leave this role with a heart full of gratitude—grateful for the privilege to serve, for the lifelong friendships forged, and for the knowledge that together we have made a difference in the lives of many.”
