2005: Dan Thompson Memorial Account Established

In 2005, the Washington State Legislature established the Dan Thompson Developmental Disabilities Community Services Account, now commonly known as the Dan Thompson Community Services Account. The account was created in state law following the death of Dan Thompson, an advocate, a Microsoft employee, and a person with a developmental disability. The account was designed to strengthen community-based supports and reflect a continued commitment to inclusion and opportunity for people with developmental disabilities.

Funds from the account are awarded as state grants to community organizations that provide supports and services in community settings for eligible individuals with developmental disabilities. By law, expenditures must supplement existing state funding and may not replace, reduce, or duplicate Medicaid Home and Community Based Services waivers. The creation of this account reinforced Washington’s long-standing focus on community living and helped expand flexible funding options to address unmet needs across the state.
