This final report documents the Leadership Project, conducted between 1986 and 1988 with support from the Washington State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council. The project focused on strengthening local advocacy groups made up of parents, self-advocates, and community members by building leadership skills, improving communication, and supporting local networks across Washington State. Through assessments, regular contact, workshops, and technical assistance, the project aimed to help communities organize, share information, and increase their ability to influence systems that affect people with developmental disabilities.
The report highlights key findings about the strengths and needs of local advocacy networks, noting wide differences in structure, experience, and resources, along with a strong desire for connection and support. It also includes recommendations for improving information sharing, strengthening informal networks, building relationships with policymakers, and increasing the visibility and advocacy role of the Developmental Disabilities Planning Council. Together, the findings reflect an early effort to invest in grassroots leadership and build a more connected disability advocacy community in Washington.
