2006: Creation of the Washington State Autism Task Force

In 2006, the Washington State Legislature created the Autism Task Force through Engrossed Substitute House Bill 2181. The task force was established to examine services and supports for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and to make recommendations for improving access, coordination, and long-term planning. At the time, families and advocates were raising concerns about growing needs, inconsistent services, and gaps across education, health care, and community supports.

The Autism Task Force brought together legislators, state agencies, providers, educators, and family representatives to study service delivery systems and propose improvements. Its work helped elevate autism-related policy discussions statewide and laid groundwork for future system changes focused on early identification, coordinated supports, and improved access to services for individuals with autism and their families.
